Judge O'Brien has served our community on the bench in The People's Court since being elected in 2018. Under her leadership, the court cleared a significant backlog left by her predecessor and turned the court into one of the busiest in Dallas County.
Dallas County has five Justice of the Peace districts, with each district electing two JPs and one Constable. Precinct 2 consists of Balch Springs, far East Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Rowlett, Sachse, and Sunnyvale. Justices of the Peace have jurisdiction over small civil claims cases of up to $20,000, such as contact disputes, insurance claims, car or home repair disputes, as well as other civil cases like debt claims/credit card cases and evictions. The court also handles minor criminal cases that are class C misdemeanor and below, including traffic tickets. Additionally, JP's also may issue mental warrants, occupational driver's license, and conduct marriage ceremonies.
